Escuela Caracol School: A Waldorf-Inspired school which offers a solution to the dilemma of education for both indigenous and international families. The holistic mode of learning promotes the development of well-rounded and freethinking individuals who possess creative capacities useful in all realms of life. Academic subjects include math, science, history and language arts. The Waldorf curriculum also contains special subjects such as sewing and weaving, painting, music, yoga and gardening. There about 25 students. Half are westerners and the other half are local Maya children on full scholarship.
Targeted School Needs: Garden equipment and supplies. These supplies would be used in preparing and executing gardening projects with the children, which are usually done on at least a bi-weekly basis. These projects provide the invaluable experience of working with the earth, experiencing the process of food production from seed to fruit, and also addressing development of gross and fine motor skills. Curriculum topics include the Living Earth: Soil Nutrients, Weather, Climate, Cycles and Changes, Garden Ecology, Garden Creatures and Food Choices.
